Lent and Holy Week

Lenten Missions

Lent is a special time to serve the Lord by serving others. Rehobeth offers these opportunities for you to follow the example of Jesus by helping your neighbors.

Available mission opportunities include:

  • Towels for the Humble Hearts Mobile Ministry: We are collecting clean, old towels and wash cloths that will be passed on to the Humble Hearts Mobile Ministry. Humble Hearts provides support to the homeless community in Hickory. Please do not donate new towels, only clean, old towels. Even raggedy ones will do. Place the towels in the specially marked containers in the narthex or fellowship hall.
  • Easter Cards for Active-Duty Soldiers, VA Hospital, and Abernethy Laurels: As has been our custom, we will be sending Easter cards to active-duty soldiers in Kuwait, patients in the VA Hospital in Salisbury, and residents of Abernethy Laurels. Cards are due by Sunday, April 3, to allow ample time for mailing.

Lenten Bible Study: March 6 to April 12

This season of Lent, we will be reading Good Enough: 40ish Devotionals for a Life of Imperfection by Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie. Kate Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School who was diagnosed at age 35 with stage 4 cancer. This led her to think in different terms that what she originally studied for her Ph.D. (She may be best known for her book about her diagnosis entitled Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lifes I Have Believed.)

If you wish to participate in this study, please order a copy of the book (Amazon Kindle version is $11.99, or $14.79 for the hardcover). We will read about 6 or 7 chapters a week and discuss them each Tuesday night in the Fellowship Hall. Sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. and last about 45 minutes.

We will also stream these discussions on Facebook Live each Tuesday night.

And for the Kids … an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt

The Children’s Ministry is hosting an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, April 10, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Unlike past years, this year’s hunt will allow children to explore the church building as they learn about the resurrection of Christ. The last stop in the scavenger hunt will be the Family Life Center, where children will enjoy snacks and goodies. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors to this unique Easter activity!

Holy Week Schedule: April 10 to April 17

Rehobeth offers a series of special services and events as we follow Jesus’ journey to the cross and celebrate his triumph over sin and death. We trust that each of these services and events will bless you!

  • Palm Sunday Services, April 10 at 8:45 and 10:45 AM: Join us as we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
  • Maundy Thursday Service, April 14 at 7:00 PM: All are invited to the Maundy Thursday Service, in remembrance of Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples.
  • Good Friday (Tenebrae) Service, April 15 at 8:00 PM: On Good Friday, join us for Tenebrae (a “Service of Darkness”). The service features readings from the Bible describing the Passion of Christ and is characterized by the gradual extinguishing of lights and the stripping of the altar and pulpit. It is a powerful, deeply moving reminder of the suffering Jesus endured for our sake.
  • Prayer Vigil, April 15-17: Immediately following the Tenebrae Service on Good Friday, we will hold a prayer vigil. During this time, members of the church will come to the sanctuary to pray. Our goal is to have someone in the sanctuary every hour until 7:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday. Please sign up for a time slot when the sign-up sheet is passed around during services leading up to Holy Week.
  • Easter Sunday, April 17: Celebrate the empty tomb and Christ’s resurrection! Note that our services are held at special times today: “Sunrise” service at 7:00 AM in the cemetery and combined service at 10:00 AM in the sanctuary. Following the Sunrise service, join us for a time of fellowship and a light breakfast of pastries, coffee, and juice in the Family Life Center.
