Mission & Ministry Opportunities
Cards for Our Troops – For more than 10 years, Rehobeth has been sending cards to our wounded troops in Afghanistan and active troops in Kuwait. Make a commitment to write a card or two each week to let the men and women in the military hospital in Afghanistan and military base in Kuwait know how much you appreciate their service. Indicate on the envelope what type of card is enclosed ("Get Well," "Thank You," or "Thinking of You"). Remember, to comply with military security requirements, do not include your return address. Place your cards in the red, white, and blue box located in the narthex. Thank you for supporting our troops!
Backpacks for Kids - Thanks to everyone who supported the "Backpacks for Kids" program in February! After learning that there is still a tremendous need, the Mae Howard Circle is sponsoring a second Backpacks for Kids food drive for the month of May. This program helps children in need by supplying them with extra food over the weekends. We are asking the entire congregation to participate by bringing certain food items that will be easy for children to take home in their backpacks. These might include peanut butter crackers, granola bars, single serving fruit cups/apple sauce, soups, ramen noodles, instant oatmeal or grits, beef-a-roni, spaghetti-o’s, etc. Place your food items in the container in the narthex. Thank you for helping to feed the children of Catawba Elementary School.
Rehobeth's Turn to Volunteer at ECCCM - Rehobeth's annual turn to volunteer at the Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry (ECCCM) in Newton will be May 16, 17, 18, and 19. You can sign up to work the morning shift( 8:30 AM to noon), the afternoon shift (1:00PM to 4:30 PM), or both. It would be great to have at least two volunteers for each time slot. (If you can’t stay the entire time, that’s okay.) Volunteer opportunities include: bagging food for distribution, stocking shelves, filling client orders at the drive-through door, and sorting donations. The Ministry always needs your help due to the amount of food that is distributed and the amount of crisis assistance that is given to the community. ECCCM could not accomplish this work without you. Volunteers will leave with a better understanding of ECCCM and how this ministry is an extension of Rehobeth’s mission work in our community. Please sign the list in the narthex if you can volunteer. Printed directions are also available next the the sign-up sheet.
It's Flamingo Flocking Season - You can now order a flamingo flocking for a friend for $20. FLY youth and adult leaders will put plastic pink flamingos in lawns with signage that you have been flocked by Rehobeth UMC FLY Youth for Missions. All proceeds will go toward our youth mission trip to Virginia in July. To order a flock, see a youth member! Flocking season ends May 1.
Church Directory Update - We are in the process of updating the church membership directory. Church members, please take a few minutes to review the list in the narthex and make sure your name, address, telephone number, and email address are correct. If any changes need to be made, please mark them on the list. Thank you!
Register for Pickleball Tournament - FLY Youth will sponsor a Pickleball Madness Tournament fundraiser for their mission trip to Virginia. The Pickleball players have been practicing long and hard since February and are ready to show off their skills. Come and join us for a cookout as our Pickleball teams play. The meal will include hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, chips, drinks, and assorted desserts. There is no set price for the meal, but donations will help fund the youth mission trip this summer.
Pickleball players, select your teammate now for the tournament! The cost is $10 per team. Registration is due by April 25.
Mother's Day Bulletin - FLY is putting together a special insert for the Mother's Day Bulletin on Sunday, May 8. Everyone in the congregation is invited to write the name of a special lady on the "In honor of" or "In memory of" lists in the narthex. A donation of $1 per name would be appreciated. All donations will help support the youth mission trip this summer. The deadline is Sunday, May 1st.
VBS Volunteer Planning Meetings - All who are interested in helping with Vacation Bible School this year, please join us on Sunday, May 15 at 4 PM or Wednesday, May 18 at 6:30 PM in the fellowship hall. There are a lot of ways you can be a part of this year’s VBS, such as preparing crafts, leading games, helping with music and props, and more. We are in need of several people to play Bible characters throughout the week during Story-time sessions! And if anyone is interested in leading an Adult VBS class that week, please see Natalie. This year’s VBS has an adult curriculum included.
Homecoming 2016 - We will celebrate Homecoming at Rehobeth on Sunday, May 1. Our speaker this year will be Mrs. Beth Moore McKeithan. Beth is a child of Rehobeth Church, has served in Namibia in Southwest Africa with the Peace Corp, and currently works at Prevent Child Abuse Rowan in Salisbury, NC. This year, rather than having a former pastor speak, we thought it would be special to have one of our very own who can share with us the difference being part of a vibrant Church family makes in one’s life and career choices. Beth will be speaking at both the 8:45 and the 10:45 AM services on May 1. Following the latter service, all are invited to a covered dish meal in the fellowship hall. So bring along a couple of your favorite dishes to share!
Cole Strong/Relay for Life Golf Tournament – Spring is here and it’s time to play golf! The Rehobeth Pairs & Spares Sunday School class is sponsoring the fourth annual “Cole Strong/Relay for Life Golf Tournament” at Glen Oaks in Maiden on Monday, May 16. This fundraising event is named in honor of our own Cole Frye, the young man who showed such fortitude, spirit, and faith through his own ordeal with cancer. We are pleased to report that Cole’s latest medical scans were completely clear and showed NO signs of cancer! As always, the proceeds from the Golf Tournament will be divided equally between the American Cancer Society and someone in our community who is fighting this terrible disease. This year, our recipient will be Darleen Cornelius, who is presently taking treatments for stomach cancer.. If you are interested in learning more, please pick up an information packet from Dwight Sherrill in the narthex following the Sunday worship services.
Save the Dates for VBS! - Vacation Bible School will be held from Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24. This year's theme is Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God's Amazing Love.
